Since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was released in 2007, debates have raged furiously online about Severus Snape. Is he romantic icon? Is he a giant bully guilty of child abuse? Is he just kind of a jerk? All perfectly valid questions.
Let’s leave the questions about whether Snape is a good person behind for a bit, and look at him from a relationship perspective. Many people (especially women) have idealized Snape over the years because of his loyalty to Lily Potter. I argue that Snape should most definitely not be considered a romantic icon. I believe that Snape is one of the most prominent examples of the “Nice Guy” Trope, perhaps ever. In the video above I explain my reasoning for this quite thoroughly, as well as explaining that Snape’s feelings should not be described as loyalty or love, but obsession.
Do you disagree with me? If so, that’s okay. One of the best ways that we grow as people is to learn from other people’s perspectives. If you have thoughts on this topic, head over to the video comments and let me know what you’re thinking. You never know when your perspective could be exactly what somebody else needs to hear.
